MAINE MOOSE "R" US

MOOSE FACTS

The gestation period for moose is about eight months.

Babies generally weigh about 25 to 30 lbs at birth.  Moose usually have just one baby, but twins are not uncommon.  Triplets are very rare.

Our Maine Wildlife Exhibit by Fall's Taxidermy, of Dixfield, Maine

Vance and Diane Child own and operate Fall's Taxidermy and it was exciting for me when they came carrying this big bear in last fall. The big bear was exciting, and Vance & Diane carrying in the bearwas a favorite for young and old.  Some folks even wanted their picture taken with the bear!  Still others were afraid of it... but all wanted to see him!

Once he was in place and they finished the display I had to go in and put a leaf on his shoulder to mark where the top of my head comes.   I'm 5' 5" so it is quite obvious he's well over 7 feet.  This was an extremely large bear.  Most Maine black bears run around 200-300 lbs and sometimes the big ones top out about 500 lbs, but this guy was around 700 lbs!  This bear could eat you for lunch!

We ended up with a great window display.   With dried leaves for a bed, a coyote curled up, sleeping under a beech tree.  Nearby this little gray squirrel watched, and the raccoon looked up cautiously before gnawing on an abandoned moose antler.  A wild turkey was in full display to finish the window off.

Almost everyone who walked by stopped to look, especially the children!  We will miss our wildlife display (hibernating for the winter... ).  Actually, these animals and a lot more can be seen at Fall's Taxidermy in Dixfield.  They have a wonderful wildlife museum there, complete with moose, white tail deer, porcupines and more!  Vance said maybe he'd bring something different down next spring.  Thank you, Vance and Diane!
