The article in our
local weekly paper, mostly pictures, read::
"Moose Calling Contest
a Hoot at 2004
Oxford County Fair"
Our local paper didn't
mention Mooseland Tours sponsored the contest, hosted it, and gave out
trophies and two tours as top prizes; and they spelled my last name
wrong, and they gave me a new first name; but at least they
acknowledged
IT WAS FUN!
The rain didn't let up
by noon as expected, so we started in a small downpour! There
were at least a couple dozen brave souls huddling under an open-sided
canopy tent and gradually as the rain eased up and finally quit we must
have had at least 30 or more people watching... and about a
dozen participated, some not til they were razzed, cajoled or
blackmailed into it, but nonetheless up they came and all in all it was
great fun! One of the highlights was when two geese waddled
in during one moose caller's performance!
The "show"
started when
Robert Redfud (My brother, Rob Bennett) told some stories, and then
gave an entertaining demonstration on how to call a moose... with
whatever you have in stock... a shower curtain rod and a plastic soda
bottle, a traffic cone, etc.
and just about that time you'll never guess who showed
up!
Amos the Moose from Sugarloaf!!
Amos then responded or
ignored the attempts to call him and ended up giving out hugs to a few
bystanders and Robert Redfud before he left.
(Amos said he was going to hide out during moose hunting season and
then we could catch him on the slopes at Sugarloaf when the snow starts
falling.)
