MAINE MOOSE "R" US -- 207-998-2198 -- Temporarily Online Only! |
??? It
was a small (but important) detail that I over looked.
Moose Facts: Moose have a life expectancy of 8 to 25 years. The average is about 15-18. Use caution when driving in Moose Country. Moose are hard to see and do not show up well at night. Because of their tremendous size an encounter with a moose on the road can be fatal

We are offering
fun trips at affordable prices! The Perfect End for Our 2005 Season! Our fourth season with the moose tours ended on a high note! We looked everywhere (unsuccessfully) for moose. It was an evening tour and it was getting dark as we headed homeward. Laughter still filled the car as we rode and talked about the evening's adventures. Even though we hadn't found a moose we had a wonderful time. Suddenly something came up over the bank to our right and ran into the road ahead of us. It was a bear! Instead of running straight across, he hesitated and then ran away from us right down the middle of the road! I put the lights on high beam so we could see him better and just eased along behind him. He looked back over his shoulder nervously from time to time to see if we were still there. Finally he took the plunge and went down over the embankment to our left. We were screaming! "A BEAR!!" Not one of us felt we would be able to get a picture under the headlights, but we were content with having seen him and for so long! All of us agreed that the bear was probably about 250lbs. Not huge as bears go, average probably, but big enough to impress us! During
the evening we spotted tracks, some fresh and some not so fresh, but at
one favorite spot we I picked them up at their motel the next morning about 4:30. We wanted to get into moose country EARLY! Driving along, chatting about the previous evening and expectations for this morning's trip, I spotted very fresh tracks beside the road. The moose must have just walked out of them! Pulling off the road and hunting for my moose call, opening windows, shutting the car off... all took just seconds. I listened a moment, looked around and then tried the moose call out the open window. Sort of like our telephone ring back in the crank telephone days. Two long, three short... and in the rear view mirror I saw a young bull run into the road behind us and right across into the woods on the other side. I blurted out "There's one behind us", but the girls didn't get turned around fast enough to see him. After a couple cars passed, I waited and then tried again. Two long, three or four short... and I wish I had this on video. It's hard to describe. A big cow moose came running out so fast... and she stopped short when she hit the road and saw us... she almost tipped over. Right behind her, coming full tilt was her calf, who also stopped so short, it teetered and almost fell over. The girls saw these two! The two moose looked at us with a baffled expression, and when I called again softly, they took a couple steps closer to us and stopped again. They just knew something wasn't right! When I tried the call one more time, they decided that was it, turned and trotted off into the woods across the road. We sat there just long enough for me to hear them in the woods. They came up almost across the street from us to get a closer look, but we no longer could see them, so we moved along. We never did see "The Big Guy" but on our return journey one of the girls called out, "There's one up ahead!" That was a good size bull that was across the road running away from us. I tried to ease up on him but he was edgy and took to the woods. We did get a couple more glimpses of him as we were leaving, heading for home. It was a good morning. Good company, moose, beautiful country, nice weather, fun, laughter, successful moose calling. What more could you want?
About
Us We are still hoping to eventually purchase a "beloved" Bluebird bus for the tours as it will afford easier access, more visibility, windows that open, front and back air conditioning, and overhead space for your jackets and extra gear! We feel the little Bluebird bus will be ideal... because it is small and comfortable, but can accommodate family groups of 9-12 that want to all go out together. We've found however there aren't enough used Bluebirds available to go around, so we are still looking! We were told by a dealer that most of these small buses do not make it back to the lot as "used". We were told to look for one and when we found one to contact the owner and make arrangements to buy it when they are ready to trade. We looked at a number of other buses, but they were too old , with older style windows that don't open down (like school bus windows). The new Bluebirds are around $40,000 and that's more than I have laying around right now!! So please keep us in mind if you know someone who is about to sell or trade in a small bus. In the meantime we have purchased another van much like the white one, but newer, dark green, and with the extra door. If the air conditioning works as great as the heater, we're all set!! 207-998-2198 |
